Wintersong’s New Release Date

So about that debut year thing…

If you’re not subscribed to my newsletter, you might have missed the big announcement in this month’s Lexical Gap, wherein I announced that Wintersong’s publication date has been moved from Fall 2016 to Winter 2017.

To be honest, I’ve been sitting on this announcement for a few weeks. Content-wise and editorially, Wintersong had been finished for months, but back in March, my agent, editor, marketing and publicity team, and I had a discussion about how to package the book, namely: should Wintersong be published as an adult title or YA?

Wintersong had always straddled that line between adult and young adult, both in terms of voice and content. When I first wrote the book, my critique partners were fairly evenly split on whether or not Wintersong was adult or YA. Because there was a strong coming-of-age element to the story, I queried the book as YA, but when Wintersong was acquired by my publisher, it was bought as an adult fantasy title. When it came to launch my book in-house to the sales and marketing departments, it was put on the adult list.

But when marketing and publicity read Wintersong, they thought it might resonate more with a young adult audience than the adult science-fiction/fantasy market. We all discussed the pros and cons of moving from one category to another: my agent and editor from the creative perspective and my marketing and publicity team from the business side. After some consideration, we made a decision.

Wintersong will be making its debut on February 7, 2017 as a YA title.

Because of the move from adult to teen, we relaunched the title in-house to the children’s sales force, which unfortunately did necessitate a push in publication date to a later season. However! This does mean we will likely be getting early ARCs, so hopefully we won’t make you too long.

In addition to a new release date, I have also seen Wintersong’s cover and y’all, it is GORGEOUS. I will be revealing it to my newsletter subscribers first, so sign up for a sneak peak before it goes live!
