This was my favorite Disney as a tween *because* it was legitimately gothic and the villain was EVIL. That and the lyrics and orchestration were unlike the other fairy tales. It was dark and I loved it and now you know what kind of child I was.

The Luc Plamondon musical isn’t Andrew Lloyd Webber at all, in my opinion, but is very very cool. And beautifully Gothic.

So I thought about this for a few minutes, and asked myself “How tacky is it to pitch on someone’s personal blog, which really has nothing to do with their day job? Especially knowing that at their day job, queries from unagented aspiring authors are politely turned away.”

Then I asked, “What would a good gothic heroine do? Sit in her room, waiting to be rescued, afraid of what might be lurking in that dark, shadowy hall? Or would she stick a candle and a flint in her pocket, gather up her skirts, and go chasing into the dark after that will-o-the-wisp she spotted?” In the spirit of that intrepid heroine, who isn’t afraid to chase after the phantom, I offer my pitch for a gothic novel, A Pocketful of Ashes, set in 1837 Cornwall, in under 160 words:

The past will not stay dead at Tremayne Hall.

When Jessa Palmer journeys to rescue her late half-sister’s daughter from a tyrant of a father, she discovers someone—or something—wants to ensure she is no more successful at escaping the castle on the cliffs than her half-sister, Lily, had been.

Launched on her rescue mission by a mysterious letter, Jessa follows in Lily’s footsteps to a grim castle in the wilds of Cornwall and into the arms of its dark master, Captain Dashiell Tremayne. Bitter, brooding, and tragically scarred, he believes Jessa is a carbon copy of her manipulative, unfaithful half-sister; he’s not about to let another treacherous woman into his home—or into his heart.

When the accidents begin, the danger intensifies, as does the heat between Jessa and Dash; soon, she’ll have to make a choice—follow Lily to a fiery death, or surrender to a man she cannot trust.

Do you believe in serendipity? I wandered here from an agent’s website. Just a random sort of click. And trip into a beautiful article about gothic romances. And I just so happen to have one. Old fashioned, dark brooding hero, light in the tower where there should be none, heroine looking for answers about her dead sister, and a prescence that haunts the halls and is way too fond of fire. And poison.
