Dear Teen JJ

First Driver's License

My very first driver's license! I look like I'm 12 years old in the mugshot.

My Dear Teen Me letter is up today! It is surprisingly angsty (which my teenage years weren’t) and about FEEEEEEEEEEEELINGS, of all things. I tried to write about the bildungsroman, but eh.

Oh well. It’s kind of hard to write to your teenage self when you don’t have anything useful to say to her. I was a fairly well-adjusted and happy teen, and moreover, I knew I had it pretty good. I used to say to my parents that I’d never be a great writer because I didn’t have a shitty childhood. Happiness is boring, as they say.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it.

Man, if that’s the case, then I should be a really great writer! *sighs*

That’s sweet, though. What did your parents say to that, LOL?

They replied, “Great! Now go find a useful job.” ;) (My parents–not a literary bone in their bodies.)

Haha, yeah, I felt the same way for a long time. Thank goodness I have a good imagination.

Great letter! This was my fave part:

“I remember 16 as the year of my bildungsroman, the year I grew into a C-cup bra, the year of love letters, a secret boyfriend, lost virginity, an intensely inappropriate yet chaste infatuation, an uncomfortable awareness of the male gaze, of migraines, manic explosions, nervous breakdowns, and the first manifestations of a later-diagnosed bipolar disorder. 16 is the year I discovered the ability to crush someone’s heart to smithereens without remorse. 16 is the year two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the year my trust in older authority figures was broken.”
