Disjointed Thoughts

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

My latest obsession.

Halp, you guys. I am obsessed with a centuries-dead, genius composer. Halp. I dropped $50 I don’t have on all of Mozart’s piano concertos. (Yes, all of them. Nos. 1 through 27, plus two rondos.) I rewatched Amadeus last night. With the commentary. Again. And then I cried. With anger. Then sadness. Then anger. Then sadness. Then anger. I suppose this is how people felt when The Beatles broke up except I’m angry that a genius died almost 200 years before I was born.

I have periods of obsession with musicians. Not necessarily their music (although that too), but musicians. The most significant musician-loves of my life were Carl Barât and Pete Doherty of The Libertines, but I have others. David Bowie (but only from Ziggy Stardust through The Thin White Duke). Lady Gaga. (Everyone on Twitter knows of my adoration/love/lust of Mama Monster.) And now, Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart.

My dorkiness knows no bounds. For some reason, people find this endearing. Agent Kathleen Ortiz–to whom I shall henceforth refer as Rainbow Brite–thinks I’m “adorable” when I make a pretentious ass of myself. But then she calls me “adorable” when I dress up as a femme fatale from the 1930s, when I talk about literary fiction, or when I’m being cocky and full of myself. It’s the Boy Who Cried Wolf, missy; now I don’t know whether or not to trust you anymore.

I’ve got a lot of thoughts running through my head about books and publishing, but I think I just might listen to No. 15, KV 450 again.

*lol* That is the best obsession ever! I’ve watched the director’s cut of Amadeus more times than I’m willing to admit….and is it weird to say I have a crush on said long-dead composer? I think that’s $50 very well spent on his concertos. :)

My current musician obsession is Beethoven–I’ve been thinking about whether or not he really did meet Mozart when he was 17 and whether the third movement of his 5th symphony really was inspired completely by Mozart’s Symphony no. 40. GAH! If only time machines were real. :)

I’m a huge fan of Beethoven as well. I know he was enormously influenced by Mozart, but I don’t know if they ever met in real life.

Other composer crushes have included J.S. Bach and Handel. (I really love Handel.) But MOOOOOOOOOOOZART. *clutches chest*

I think a lot of people do that. I drop big $$$ on iTunes for my latest obsessions. The sad thing about falling in love with music from the past is that you’ll never get to see them in concert. Sad.

      Hehe–that Mozart, what a heartbreaker. :)

I read somewhere that Beethoven as a teenager went to Vienna to seek Mozart out, in order to train under him. I don’t think it was ever proven if the two met, but some say they did have a meeting in Vienna and Mozart gave the young Beethoven a lot of encouragement.

Handel is fantastic! <3 I also love Liszt (but soooooo many notes, my fingers are too clumsy to do his music justice), since he was also considered a teen prodigy and was frequently compared to Mozart in terms of his genius/precociousness.

But Mozart is truly the pinnacle of young genius. :) Everyone else can only hope to be called 'the next Mozart'!

      Who’s the pianist?

The d minor was always my favorite, but I’ve always been obsessed with minor keys. My teacher in high school was like, “You cannot audition for conservatory with only minor pieces!” Or something like that. LOL.

Please see Immortal Beloved! Or have you? Beethoven is such a bad boy… in the movie, there’s even a Rochester quality to him.

Immortal Beloved is definitely next in my queue. :) I love Beethoven lots.
