New post at Running Roommates!

Don't be fooled; this is not snow. It's ice.
Things I Learned This Past Weekend
- Running on ice works all the small muscle groups in your legs.
- Running on ice when you have one flat foot also causes blisters.
- You should always live with a tall roommate so she can do things like change your lightbulbs for you.
I’ve read MAGIC UNDER GLASS and I’m itching to discuss it, but I shall postpone that blog post for another day when I have more time. Things are picking up around here–good for business, bad for my sanity. Also, this Friday is Masquerade Prom and I have to figure out how I’m going to get ready for it when I have a full work day. Can I curl my hair on the New Jersey Transit, do you think?
Mum is in town and I’ve subjected her to a healthy dose of icky snow. Too bad she couldn’t bring southern Californian sunshine with her. I am so over February. Hell, I’m so over winter it’s not even funny.

I’ve had far less time to blog while on holiday than I had intended. Over the break I read THE MAZE RUNNER by James Dashner and FIRE by Kristin Cashore and caught up on a ton of reading for work. In addition to that, I’ve had Argos attached to my face since Christmas and I was busier taking photographs instead of blogging them.

Korean rice cake dumpling soup, or tteok guk.
Also, family. I feel grateful and blessed to be part of such a close-knit and loving family, even if we get into each other’s hair sometimes. Each one of us (with the exception of my grandmother) is an internet addict and there is only one computer with internet access in this house. One can only imagine the traffic jams that occur.
I have quite a backlog of things to write about, but in the meantime, have a look at my New Year’s Day, in which my family and I made dumplings from scratch for the traditional Korean dumpling soup. I gifted a Flickr Pro account to myself over the holidays, which can be found here.
I’m off to New York today. It was 77 degrees, clear, sunny, and beautiful in Pasadena yesterday. I hear it is 20 degrees (feels like 6) in New York. Watch as I cry.
I have retrospectives and resolutions to post as well, but until I have a computer all to myself again, I will rest with just one: find some kickass books to publish.

As an administrative note: St. Martin’s Press will be closed for business from Thursday, December 24th through Sunday, January 3rd. I, on the other hand, will continue to blog and read my face off. Over the break, expect less posts of the publishing variety and more posts of the photographic/silly/life variety.

Tomorrow I will be leaving this (park by my apartment) for...

Every year I look forward to Christmas for several reasons, not the least of which is going back home to California to get warm see my family. One of the nice things about working in publishing is that the industry takes a break between Christmas and New Year, freeing up time to read without having to worry about writing scary editorial letters (scary for me, not the author), scheduling meetings with agents, or socializing myself to death.

Note: I celebrate Christmas (the secular bits, anyway), hence why I name that holiday. Seasons greetings, happy Yule, happy Chanukah, happy Kwanzaa, and happy holidays to everyone who doesn’t!
One thing I don’t like about Christmas is shopping for gifts. I’m notoriously terrible at thinking of what to give people and even worse at receiving presents. My relatives asked what I wanted for Christmas this year. I was about to put down my usual answer (books or a gift certificate for books), when I realised my new job makes asking for books sort of moot. I actually couldn’t think of anything else.
However, this year, I have decided to foist my favourite books I’ve read in 2009 upon the people I love. As far as presents go, books are relatively inexpensive (compared to, say, a Nikon D60, which is what I actually want but don’t dare ask for). What follows is a JJ’s List of Awesome Books To Give People.

Thanksgiving dinner!
As I have for the past three years, I am spending Thanksgiving with Bear and his family because New Jersey is a lot closer to New York City than California. Thanksgiving at Chez Sacramento Joneses (my branch of the Jones family broke with tradition to settle in southern California instead of NorCal) was very traditionally American–turkey (tofurkey for me), mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potatoes baked with brown sugar and cinnamon, etc.–but not so Bear’s family.
Bear comes from a mixed racial background, the same as me, but his Thanksgiving dinners reflect a bit of his heritage: Indian-Portuguese (Goan)/Slovak. This year we have paneer, chicken curry, and pilau rice in addition to turkey and all its accoutrements. Bear’s younger brother is vegetarian like me, so the Indian food is for us.
Things I Am Thankful For
- A warm Bear and a fuzzy White-Harp
- A job I love
- My family (nuclear, extended, forged, and found)
- The winners of St. Martin’s “New Adult” contest
The winners follow below the cut, including the winners of TEMPTED by P.C. and Kristin Cast! Also below the cut are instructions for what to do next.
