Words From the Future

There was a truth on the tip of her tongue, and she was afraid to speak lest it fall out into the open. She looked at him and would not let herself give in to the insistent pressure of those words against her lips. He was not ready. She was not ready. It hurt to keep her feelings inside, expanding the seams of her heart to a nigh-unbearable pain, but the pain of losing Raphael could only be infinitely worse.

So she would keep her truth secret and she would keep it safe until the world returned to its senses, and she would be free to feel without fear of loss.

"Evie," he said softly.
S. Jae-Jones, Untitled WIP

I don’t know why I wrote this little snippet when I’ve shelved this project to focus on something else, but something about the relationship between these two characters keep coming back to me. Okay, so I let them off my mind; back to the other project!

A Prequel

As Miss Ackerley gestured grandly towards her interior decoration, Sir Corliss recalled with a start Theodora's rather unsettling habit of placing a possessively plump hand on his arm (sometimes it was other appendages) at unexpected moments. He tried to extricate himself from her grip discreetly but to no avail.
From a middle-grade incarnation of my novel

Back when I first started writing ELIJAH’S CHARIOT (or whatever the hell my work-in-progress will actually be called), it was a middle grade novel. I found the old file again and got a little nostalgic. There are some stylistic differences between YA and middle grade, but what I like about my middle grade incarnation is [...]

Yes, I’m Writing

Children were forgiven and forgotten, but young ladies were fallen. She picked at the frayed cuffs on Raphael's sleeves, wondering when she had gone from forgotten to fallen, wondering if she could ever return to that prelapsarian state.
Work in progress

Yeah, it’s from my novel. It’s a darling. Meaning it will probably get killed at some point. Still, I think this might be a fun exercise. All you writers have darlings? Little snippets of writing you absolutely love and would be resistant to parting with? Post them here!

Art as Pensieve

On the Thamesis

Continuing my artsy mood, here is a pen drawing I’ve been working on. It’s actually a drawing of the 3 protagonists from…my novel (no, no, no, I did promise to be more open with my own writing). It’s still a work in progress, as you can clearly see the bridge on which they’re standing is [...]

Write What You Know

I’ve been thinking lately about the old adage write what you know, mostly because I either live with or know people with fascinating life stories who are also writers. (I’m looking at you, Russ, and you, Wicked Cool Riley. Plz to be writing your memoirs immediately and sending me the manuscripts. Kthx.) I, on the [...]

My Interests Are Growing Up

The older I get, the more and more contemporary my interest in various time periods become. When I was a child, I had a fascination with the Victorian era and the fin de siècle but more and more I’m finding myself fascinated with the early-middle decades of the 20th century. For Elijah’s Chariot, my research consisted mostly of the events/culture from 1912-1921. For Jane Eyre with Werewolves (which still needs a better title), I’ve been focusing on 1928-1932. For The Ballad of Bonny Read or Skydiving Pirates (I really do suck at titling things), I’m looking at 1938-1945. [...]

Begone, Inner 16-Year-Old!

I am having one of those days in which my writing just sucks. As in, There’s no point to my story, the entire thing is flawed, I should go ahead and give up now, and never ever write again to preserve the honour of my family.

My inner melodramatic 16-year-old occasionally makes an appearance. [...]

Put A Ring On It

I got actually a little revision done on Elijah’s Chariot yesterday, but I think I need to muddle out some other themes/issues before progressing with it.

Things I Have Learned About My Novel Over the Course of Revision

  1. This is not a story about saving the day; this is a story about three children struggling to stay friends through impending civil war.
  2. This is not a story about good vs. evil; this is a story about finding your moral centre in the midst of compelling, but wrong extremes.
  3. This is also a book about parents (or the lack thereof): good ones, bad ones, false ones, true ones.
  4. Miracles are not only linked to a state of Grace, but to strong emotions as well; love above all. (I know, I know, how Harry Potter/J.K. Rowling of me.)

The first was a bit of a revelation for me. [...]

Day Two: Have Become Welsh

I made the perhaps not-so-unusual discovery that I’ve Pavlov-trained myself to revise only when I’ve got a certain playlist on iTunes going. In the past few days I’ve been playing my entire library on random and the resultant mental space was scattered. I’ve also discovered that even my iTunes has a musical preference; it’s quite enamoured of Morrissey/The Smiths and Pete Doherty/Babyshambles. (I find this interesting as Pete was always the Smiths fan while Carl was the Velvet Underground fan.) Morrissey’s all right, but Babyshambles is a huge hit-or-miss. And most of their songs tend to be misses.

This morning I awoke and was determined to work on revisions and put on my Elijah’s Chariot playlist and lo and behold, I am immediately able to work. Amazing. [...]
