More Waiting
I swear, Pottermore is just an extension of what I did for most of my life with regards to Harry Potter: wait for the next installment.
I’m Magical! At Last!
AT LAST! I always knew I was a witch. Now I’m just waiting for my Hogwarts letter (15 years too late, but hey, better late than never)…
When I’m 80 years old and sitting in my rocking chair, I’ll be reading Harry Potter. And my family will say to me, “After all this time?” And I will say, “Always.”Alan Rickman
Oh god. I think my heart just got ripped out of my chest.
Thursday night, come midnight, I shall be watching the last Harry Potter film with Psychic Roommate, my friend Jen, and White-Harp, and will possibly be flailing and sobbing like a mad Muppet. Remind me to bring a huge box of tissues to because I CANNOT COPE. FEELINGS. I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS.
Pottermore!
I sincerely thought I had left my obsessive fangirl tendencies behind me, but who are we kidding? I probably never will grow out of my obsessive fangirl tendencies, especially when it comes to the book series that defined my life. (Quite literally. I started reading about Harry’s adventures when I was 12. I’m almost 26 now.) As soon as the announcement went live, I signed up for Pottermore…on my iPhone…before I’d even left my bed this morning.
I suppose we truly are living in a digital age?
But honestly, the level of excitement I’m feeling is rather embarrassing, despite how underwhelming the idea of a pseudo-not-really-MMORPG is, not to mention, “Oh ebooks, ho hum.” However. Oh however! 18,000 WORDS OF NEW CONTENT. Booyeah, that’s what I’m talking about, baby! Woohoo!
Oh wait, I did find a GIF to illustrate what I’m feeling!
Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. :)
Literary Crushes: Part IV
How was everyone’s weekend? Mine was super, thanks for asking. I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I and ran a 4 mile race with the best pace time I’ve had in 7 months.
So I am uncharacteristically cheerful on this Monday morning, and what better way to continue in this happy vein than another installment of the Literary Crushes series? This one is a bit unusual in that this type of crush in that there is no real Ur-Character that spawned crushes on similar sorts. It’s probably because he’s a bit hard to pin down, and that it’s only in retrospect can I attribute a crush to him.
A perfect example of this character is Will Parry from Philip Pullman’s HIS DARK MATERIALS. I had liked Will from the start, but never crushed on him because, let’s be honest, the series’ crushworthy character is totally Mrs. Coulter. (SHUT UP. Mrs. Coulter and her ilk will get a separate post anyway.) But the more I read this book, the more I find myself loving Will: loving his keen sense of justice, his steadiness, and his quiet passion. Loving, not crushing.
Will–and others like him–are what I call Diamonds in the Rough.
Blogging Is Hard!
You know what I’ve discovered? Blogging is hard! I never thought blogging was hard before, but that might have had to do with the fact that I spent most of 2009 unemployed and my previous jobs were so dull I blogged about everything else instead.
I’m in a bit of a nostalgic mood. Another teaser trailer for the final Harry Potter movie was released yesterday and I found myself tearing up. (Why yes, I am a sentimental fool.) Not only is the series coming to an end, I feel a little bit as though my entire childhood is ending as well.
Now, of course, in the eyes of the law, I haven’t been a child for years, but HARRY POTTER was such an integral part of my formative years. While the book series ended when I was 22, the movie franchise allowed me to extend that feeling of adolescence into my mid-twenties. Counting the movies, HARRY POTTER would have been part of over half my life: from 12 to 25. That’s 13 years.
There is much to love about HARRY POTTER and there’s something to be said for a series of books that captured the interest of everyone, and I quite literally mean everyone. Having worked in publishing for a while now, the concept of an “all-ages, all genders” book is like the mythical unicorn. Nice, but doesn’t seem to exist. We all publish to shelf these days.
But what is it about HARRY POTTER that made it transcend all the limiting boundaries we place on our books?

Welcome to day 2 of JJ Will Probably Alienate A Lot of People By Blogging About Race! In case you missed the previous posts:
Race in Fiction Week
Today I want to tackle how to describe race in fiction. There are many schools of thought about this and I don’t think my opinion is the only “right” way to go about it. But my thoughts come a personal place: as someone of a “minority” race in the US who reads a lot of books.
There are (more or less) two schools of thought with regards to describing characters of a different race. The first is DO EVERYTHING BUT MENTION THEIR RACE DIRECTLY. The second is a much more forthright approach.
Lifelong Dork
Attending midnight viewings makes one feel suspiciously hungover the next morning, even when there was no alcohol involved. How is that possible? Is it because I’m old now? I am 24 years old after all.
Last night, Wicked Cool Riley, her friend Chris, and I attended a midnight showing of Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince. A review to follow, but I did promise to review NAAMAH’S KISS by Jacqueline Carey, didn’t I?
While We’re on the Subject of Nearly Naked Dan
The world pervs along with me, according to this article by CNN.
Also, who writes their godawful headlines?
‘Potter’ star Radcliffe stirs storm with naked pics
Seriously, who?
Edited to add: THE RELEASE DATE FOR HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS (band name? Seriously? Any takers?) IS OUT. JULY 21ST, 2007. OH EM EFF GEE.
