Through the Looking Glass

Can I just say that Baby T-Rex has got some mad Photoshopping skills? A whole bunch of publishing people came over to my apartment a couple of weeks ago and we had a steampunk photoshoot for Kathleen’s Photoshop class. TOTALLY AWESOME. I’m totally going to climb in through my living room mirror and hitch a ride on that ship.

Shameless Sunday: Steampunk Fun

Saturday I had a baby T-Rex come visit me in order to go steampunk shopping in my closet. She needed it for a project, so we riffled through my hangers to see if my clothes would oblige.

It did! And we had many options to choose from, including a few Baby T-Rex didn’t see because I forgot I had them. (For instance, I rediscovered a corset + bustle that used to be a really hideous prom dress that I just cut three-quarters of the skirt off.) So what if I’m 25 years old and still enjoy playing dressup? So what if I go through life pretending to be a different character everyday? Today’s character: Schlubby Dancer. I am in leggings, leg warmers, ballet shoes (not flats, shoes), a tank top, oversized shirt, and sweatshirt. I am Schlubby Dancer a lot, especially on the weekends, because her clothes are the easiest and most comfortable to wear.

Maybe I’ll make style posts a regular Saturday or Sunday feature, the way I attempt to do with Photo Fridays. I can call it Shamelessly Sartorial. Or something. Earlier this week, I was Springtime Asian Schoolgirl. Warm weather turns me into an anime character. I wish I were lying.

LEVIATHAN by Scott Westerfeld

Autumn is in full swing in New York City, which means that JJ is approaching hibernation mode. My inherent tendency when the weather grows cool and the days grow shorter is to curl up under the covers with a White-Harp and read, read, read (and occasionally gorge on Indian food). I have about a million things I need to take care of (including grocery shopping), but my first reaction is to snuggle with a fuzzy Harp and never leave the bed. This means that not only errands are pushed to the wayside, but things like blogging and book reviewing are also forgotten.

I need an office

While I was in DC last week visiting Mum, we made a stop by the nearest bookstore for something to read. She wanted something light and funny, so I recommended David Sedaris’ ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY, which I think she’ll enjoy, especially the France sections. Not so sure about the drugs and homosexuality though. Oh well.

I got myself Scott Westerfeld‘s LEVIATHAN, but I will admit it was a close call between that and Joshua Gaylord‘s HUMMINGBIRDS, both of which had co-op at the front of the store. But because I am cheap—and because I love steampunk—I went with LEVIATHAN. (The one advantage to being a lover of YA is that it is significantly cheaper than adult fiction.)

Steampunk is Awesome

I’ve seen this link before (on Neil Gaiman‘s blog!) and didn’t bother to comment on it then, but: this keyboard is amazing. And if I had the money, I would totally get The Aviator. Now if someone would only refurbish a Mac computer to look like this, I’d be set. If I had the skill, talent, and resources (and guts) I would absolutely turn Pantalaimon into this. (Alas for Sabina, she is an acoustic guitar and therefore unable to be turned into a steampunk guitar.) These people are geniuses!
